Sarah Palin's 9 Most Disturbing Beliefs

It's time to shift the discussion about Palin to what really matters: her far-right views on the issues. Let's forget for a moment that Sarah Palin likes to kill moose, has lots of children and was once voted the second-prettiest lady in Alaska; that's all part of the gusher of sensationalist, but not particularly substantive, news that has dominated coverage of the Alaska governor's addition to the Republican ticket.
AlterNet has compiled a list of Palin's most shocking beliefs, ranging from her positions on the economy to her views on reproductive rights. This list has nothing to do with her personal life, her looks or her gender. It's the stuff that voters need to know: what Sarah Palin really believes.
1. Despite problems at home, Sarah Palin does not believe in giving teenagers information about sex.
Like John McCain, Palin's approach to the problems of teen pregnancy and STI transmission is abstinence-only education. In a 2006 questionnaire by the conservative group Eagle Forum, Palin stated: "Explicit sex-ed programs will not find my support."
2. Sarah Palin believes the U.S. Army is on a mission from God.
In June, Palin gave a speech at the Wasilla Assembly of God, her former church, in which she exhorted ministry students to pray for American soldiers in Iraq. "Our national leaders are sending them out on a task that is from God," she told them.
3. Sarah Palin believes in punishing rape victims.
Palin thinks that rape victims should be forced to bear the child of their rapist. She believes this so strongly that she would oppose abortion even if her own daughter were raped.
4. Who's really not in favor of clean water? Sarah Palin.
Palin said, "Let me take my governor's hat off just for a minute here and tell you, personally, Prop. 4 -- I vote no on that." And what is that? A state initiative that would have banned metal mines from discharging pollution into salmon streams.
5. Sarah Palin calls herself a reformer, but on earmarks and the "Bridge to Nowhere," she is a hypocrite.
The Associated Press reported, "In her two years as governor, Alaska has requested nearly $750 million in special federal spending, by far the largest per-capita request in the nation." While Palin notes she rejected plans to build a $398 million bridge from Ketchikan to an island with 50 residents and an airport, that opposition came only after the plan was ridiculed nationally as a "Bridge to Nowhere."
6. Sarah Palin believes creationism should be taught in schools.
According to the Anchorage Daily News, Palin stated, "Teach both. You know, don't be afraid of information. Healthy debate is so important, and it's so valuable in our schools. I am a proponent of teaching both."
7. Sarah Palin supports offshore drilling everywhere, even if it doesn't solve our energy problems.
The Miami Herald reported:
The Alaska governor has said that she has tried to persuade McCain to agree with her on drilling in the wildlife refuge. She also has said that she was happy that he changed his position over the summer and now supports offshore oil drilling.
8. Sarah Palin loves oil and nuclear power.
Aside from her "drill here, drill there, drill everywhere" approach to our energy crisis, the only other things we know about Palin's energy policy, especially given her Bush-like love of avoiding the press, comes from her acceptance speech:
Starting in January, in a McCain-Palin administration, we're going to lay more pipelines, build more nuclear plants, create jobs with clean coal and move forward on solar, wind, geothermal and other alternative sources.
9. Sarah Palin doesn't think much of community activism; she'd much rather play insider political games.
In her Republican convention speech, Palin slammed Barack Obama's early political work, saying, "I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a community organizer, except you have actual responsibilities." Palin's put-down of grassroots workers, often unpaid or low-paid, demeaned an American tradition of neighbors helping neighbors, according to Deepak Bhargava, executive director of the Center for Community Change. But more revealing is Palin's apparent lack of experience in community change and local volunteer efforts, during her years in Alaska before becoming governor.

Drop the Charges Against Independent Journalists
Outraged over recent arrests of journalists at both the Republican and Democratic National Conventions? You should be!
"You won’t hear much about it in the tightly scripted primetime broadcasts from St. Paul, but local law enforcement is rounding up reporters in an aggressive – and sometimes violent – sweep outside the Republican National Convention. Their crime: committing journalism.
"Those arrested Monday while trying to cover street protests include Amy Goodman of the national radio and television program Democracy Now! and two producers from her show, as well as a photographer from the Associated Press. They’ve since been released, but the Democracy Now! team still faces serious charges.
"Other independent journalists have been pepper-sprayed and even held at gunpoint during “pre-emptive” raids aimed at disrupting protesters. Two videographers from Seattle’s Pepperspray Productions and several Kentucky journalism students remain behind bars as of this writing.
"Free Press, the national, nonpartisan media reform group, is calling on St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman and local law enforcement officials to immediately release from custody and drop all charges against any journalists arrested while covering events surrounding the RNC. In less than 24 hours, more than 35,000 people from across the country have signed letters protesting this gross violation of free speech and freedom of the press."

ABC News: On Obama, Earmarks, Palin Less Than Honest

Palin lies about the Bridge to Nowhwere (she was for it before she was against it), earmarks generally (she loved them before she hated them), and Obama's legislative record (she didn't know we had a federal government with its own Senate).

"Cross in the Dirt" story stolen from Solzhenitsyn (updated)

"I was watching the forum last night and decided that since I hadn't eaten yet, I would try to listen to John McCain speak. I was doing OK with the "my friends" and the evil chuckle when I heard him talk about his POW story of the cross in the dirt. That was when I couldn't take it anymore.
"UPDATE: This story was actually excerpted from "The Gulag Archipelago" by Alexander Solzhenitsyn, which was released in the US in 1973.
"UPDATE X2: It seems that McCain is a bit of a Solzhenitsyn fan, as evidenced in his article in the NY Sun here. Thanks to Turing for the link.
"UPDATE X3: May other great Kossacks have expanded on my diary. Check out their great diaries.

GOPers For Obama Rip McCain On Georgia, Tout Hagel As VP

GOPers For Obama Rip McCain On Georgia, Tout Hagel As VP
"I served with Sen. McCain, and he and I were the only two to vote against the Bush/Cheney tax cuts," recalled Chafee. "During this campaign it is a different John McCain. He is saying he would make the tax cuts permanent. He is advocating more drilling whereas he voted against drilling in ANWR. It goes to his credibility. And that is such an important issue for this country... plus his foreign policy has been consistently with Bush/Cheney and I know from my perspective that is a huge issue for the United States."

Did McCain Plagiarize His Georgia Speech From Wikipedia?

A Wikipedia editor notices some similarities between Sen. John McCain's speech today on the crisis in Georgia and the Wikipedia article on the country Georgia. They appear similar enough that most people would consider parts of McCain's speech to be derived from Wikipedia.

House Party Ends in Shouting, Tears
House Party Ends in Shouting, Tears
Last night, I went to one of the Unite for Change House parties for Barack Obama at the home of my hair stylist. She's an Aquarian Moon, so the assembled was a diverse mix of young, middle-aged, old, black, white, gay, straight, tattooed and conservative looking...somebody dropped the F-bomb in reference to Obama's recent reversal -- a decision not to accept public funding. That means he'll rely on private funds, with all the strings that are usually attached to that cash...This firebrand participant caused the room to explode, with people talking out of turn, and steering the conversation into dark, despairing comments like, "Who really runs this country?", "Do the people have a voice?, and "Are the two parties that different anymore?"
Every now and then, someone tried to look on the bright side, but was quickly reminded of the real mess we're in. It seemed like there was no going back to cheery American-style pretending that one man could fix it. The young Obama staffer lost control of the living room audience, started to tear up, and ran out. She later came back, but could not stop crying. There was no resolution, and I left feeling jarred, but like I had been part of something very real. It felt like a dysfunctional family grasping in the dark, and considering whether to stage an intervention. It left me feeling a wee bit of hope.

GOAT - A High Country News Blog » Conspiracy theory: McCain holocaust

Maybe you can make sense of this: I can't.
Native Americans: Navajo Indians targeted for brutal genocide,
in Arizona, USA ...by Sen. John McCain & a few greedy Senators SYNOPSIS: To facilitate his special interests, namely: Peabody Western Coal Company (the largest in the US) and the Mohave Generating Facility in Laughlin (operated by Bechtel) delivering low cost electricity to Las Vegas's Casinos, John McCain (a/k/a "Saddam McCain") introduced and arranged for the enforcement of unethical and Constitutionally unlawful legislations which brutally displaced thousands of Navajo farmers onto a Nuclear Waste Dump to live after brutalizing them for two decades in peaceful resistance. McCain assembled (Navajo Resettlement & Navajo Accommodation Agreement, Navajo Settlement, and amendments to PL 93-531, PL S.1003) illegal and unethical enactments designed to force Native American Navajo of the Dineh Band off their Arizona lands, moving them onto Church's Hill in Nevada, depriving them of lands they've owned since 1500 AD.
Using a phony tribal counsel composed of paid stooges, McCain and Peabody Western Coal Company have been progressively stealing and exploiting their lands for mutual personal gain, brutalizing the natives to leave, bulldozing their sacred sites and sweat lodges, beating their members and abusing their elders to the point of terrorizing them and causing health failure and heart failures. Fake Hopi Rangers (BIA Police) arrest and beat any peaceful resistors on their own lands and sacred sites. Three Presidential runs by McCain have been backed by the Mining, Power company and its Nevada Casino clients. McCain's wife has been granted huge Beer distribution contracts at her liquor company by Nevada gaming interests. The supposed "new lands" at Church's Hill are a Superfund Nuclear Waste Dump landfill site! (Read the evidence by clicking below) "Am I my Brother's Keeper?" View all of the evidence, play

Poll Finds Americans Pessimistic, Want Change

One year out from the 2008 election, Americans are deeply pessimistic and eager for a change in direction from the agenda and priorities of President Bush, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll. Overwhelmingly, Democrats want a new direction, but so do three-quarters of independents and even half of Republicans. Sixty percent of all Americans said they feel strongly that such a change is needed after two terms of the Bush presidency.
