Sprint fed customer GPS data to cops over 8 million times: ars technica

“A blogger has released audio of Sprint's Electronic Surveillance Manager describing the carrier's cooperation with law enforcement. Among the revelations are that Sprint has so far filled over 8 million requests from LEOs for customer GPS data.

“Christopher Soghoian, a graduate student at Indiana University's School of Informatics and Computing, has made public an audio recording of Sprint/Nextel's Electronic Surveillance Manager describing how his company has provided GPS location data about its wireless customers to law enforcement over 8 million times.

“Through a mix of documents unearthed by Freedom of Information Act requests and the aforementioned recording, Soghoian describes how ‘the government routinely obtains customer records from ISPs detailing the telephone numbers dialed, text messages, emails and instant messages sent, web pages browsed, the queries submitted to search engines, and geolocation data, detailing exactly where an individual was located at a particular date and time.’”

New picture reveals head injury to G20 victim before death

A photo has emerged which reveals a head injury sustained by Ian Tomlinson during the G20 protests before he died.

The clip, which was handed to the Guardian newspaper and the IPCC shows the startling force with which his head appears to hit the ground.

And it seems to show the 47-year-old put up no resistance to the approaching police officers in the moments before he was hit and shoved to the ground.

Controversial Militia Report Shut Down

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Missouri shut down a controversial report that linked right-wing groups with militia movements. The report indicates you might be a militia member if, for example, you supported a third-party presidential candidate, such as Ron Paul. The report was supposed to be used by law enforcement, but it was leaked. The report outraged third-party supporters because it indicates you might be a domestic terrorist if you belong to the Libertarian party, for example, or if you have a Bob Barr bumper sticker on your car.

Drop the Charges Against Independent Journalists

Outraged over recent arrests of journalists at both the Republican and Democratic National Conventions? You should be!

"You won’t hear much about it in the tightly scripted primetime broadcasts from St. Paul, but local law enforcement is rounding up reporters in an aggressive – and sometimes violent – sweep outside the Republican National Convention. Their crime: committing journalism.

"Those arrested Monday while trying to cover street protests include Amy Goodman of the national radio and television program Democracy Now! and two producers from her show, as well as a photographer from the Associated Press. They’ve since been released, but the Democracy Now! team still faces serious charges.

"Other independent journalists have been pepper-sprayed and even held at gunpoint during “pre-emptive” raids aimed at disrupting protesters. Two videographers from Seattle’s Pepperspray Productions and several Kentucky journalism students remain behind bars as of this writing.

"Free Press, the national, nonpartisan media reform group, is calling on St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman and local law enforcement officials to immediately release from custody and drop all charges against any journalists arrested while covering events surrounding the RNC. In less than 24 hours, more than 35,000 people from across the country have signed letters protesting this gross violation of free speech and freedom of the press."

The Police State Is Right Here, Right Now

As nightfall does not come all at once, neither does oppression. In both instances, there is a twilight when everything remains seemingly unchanged. And it is in such a twilight that we all must be aware of change in the air—however slight—lest we become unwilling victims of the darkness.~Justice William O. Douglas~

  • In each instance she compares and contrasts how America’s adherence to the pattern compares or contrasts with the pattern in pre-World War II Germany. The 10 steps are:
  • • Invoking an external and internal threat
  • • Establishing secret prisons
  • • Developing a paramilitary force
  • • Surveiling ordinary citizens
  • • Infiltrating citizens’ groups
  • • Arbitrarily detaining and releasing citizens
  • • Targeting key individuals
  • • Restricting the press
  • • Casting criticism as “espionage” and dissent as “treason”
  • • Subverting the rule of law
